
PLANTALIA

In the Plantalia video animation, the plant is never permitted to settle into a specimen. It emerges only to become something else. Leaves gather around an unfamiliar architecture; stems extend, divide, and withdraw; flowers open into forms that seem briefly animal or mineral before dissolving into another order of life. The image does not proceed toward completion. It remains in a state of perpetual transformation, as though every organism carried within itself several possible bodies, several histories, and several futures.
Traditional botanical representation often arrests the plant at an exemplary moment. The herbarium sheet presses it into stillness; the botanical plate gathers flowers, leaves, seeds, and fruit into a single idealized image. Such representations make the plant legible by removing it from the duration and disorder of its living environment. Plantalia begins from a different premise. Here, knowledge does not depend upon fixing the plant in place. The plant is understood through its instability, through its capacity to emerge, mutate, fragment, and disappear.
This instability evokes the uncertain temporality of threatened ecologies. Extinction is frequently imagined as a terminal event, a final disappearance that can be assigned a date and entered into a record. Yet extinction begins much earlier. It unfolds through diminishing populations, interrupted migrations, absent pollinators, altered soils, fragmented habitats, and relationships that become impossible to sustain. A species may continue to exist while the world necessary for its survival is already vanishing around it.
The forms in Plantalia are generated through an exchange among archival sources, botanical research, digital painting, animation, and artificial intelligence. Historical images, once intended to identify and stabilize their subjects, enter a process that makes them fluid again. The archive is no longer a place in which the plant remains safely preserved. It becomes a field of variation in which inherited images are disassembled, recombined, and returned to movement.
Artificial intelligence participates in this process as an instrument of proliferation and uncertainty. It produces forms that remain connected to botanical references while exceeding their established classifications. The resulting plants seem at once remembered and unprecedented, as though they belonged to a natural history that has not yet occurred or to one whose evidence survives only in fragments. Their instability is both biological and technological. They are shaped by the histories contained in the source material, by the logic of the computational model, and by my own acts of selection, transformation, and composition.
Metamorphosis in Plantalia is therefore neither ornamental nor simply fantastic. It is the condition through which the work considers vulnerability. Each plant appears intensely alive, yet its vitality contains the possibility of dissolution. Growth resembles dispersal; regeneration approaches erasure. The same movement that brings a form into visibility also begins to undo it.
Plantalia reflects on the limits of preservation. An archive can retain an image, a name, or a description, but it cannot preserve the complete network of relations through which a living organism exists. Nor can a digital representation substitute for the plant whose appearance it carries. The image may survive while the species disappears, becoming evidence of a life that can still be seen but no longer encountered.
By suspending its plants between appearance and erasure, Plantalia asks the viewer to experience extinction as an unfolding condition rather than a completed historical fact. Disappearance takes place within the duration of the work, before the eye, through forms that continually struggle to remain present. What emerges is not a memorial to a world already lost, but an encounter with a living world whose future remains unresolved.
